Emmanuel Adebayor 'stuck in Benin for 15 days' and risks being sacked by Paraguayan club Olimpia

Emmanuel Adebayor has put his future at new club Olimpia in doubt after being held in quarantine after attempting to fly home to his family in Togo.

The 36-year-old’s efforts to escape the coronavirus outbreak were left in disarray after he was held during a stop-over in Benin after flying back from Paraguay.

Adebayor, a former Arsenal, Manchester City, Tottenham and Crystal Palace forward, signed for Paraguayan club Olimpia last month.

But after the South American country was placed in partial lockdown due to coronavirus fears he decided to escape to be with his family.

But his journey required him to travel via the small West African nation of Benin – and he was immediately told he would have to go into isolation on his arrival.

He is now in a hotel in the port city of Cotonou – and must stay there for at least 15 days.

The Togo legend told The Mirror: “It is like being at home – it doesn't bother me at all.”

The fact that Adebayor was even in Paraguay came as a big surprise to many in the footballing world anyway.

After spending three years with Turkish club Kayserispor he announced he would be joining Olimpia last month.

But he did not had the best of starts with his new club after being handed a suspension for a kung-fu kick on an opposition player.

He failed to score in his four games and his future could now be in doubt after news of his travel chaos.
